If you don’t do what you want, it’s not going to be as good. Q: Do you have any advice for the aspiring female screenwriters out there?Ī: Do what you want, not what you think other people want or what will make money. Q: Do you have any particular genre you are drawn to? Like, women will watch “male” shows such as Sons of Anarchy, but not as many men will watch shows like Enlightened or Big Love or even Girls I guess. I’d say the hardest thing for women is that networks usually don’t want to buy female shows. It is extremely hard for any writer, male or female, to make a living in this industry. Q: What was your personal experience as a female screenwriter in the industry were there any particular hardships or obstacles you had to overcome as a woman/ as a writer?Ī: There’s definitely no “was” as I am in the thick of it right now and am sort of just getting started. Especially women who want to work with other women, which shockingly there are not enough of. Q: What is your opinion on the amount of females there are in the screenwriting profession?Ī: We need more. If I think there’s a chance I can make someone laugh then I’m gonna go for it. Q: Where do you get your inspiration for your work?Ī: From other works of art books, movies, photography, people… I’m usually drawn to things that make people feel weird or uncomfortable but also funny things and things that seem hopeful. This was during the early 2000s during that whole “Electroclash” thing that happened in NYC.

Q: What was the first piece of work you ever wrote?Ī: Well the first thing I ever got paid to write, the first thing I ever published, was an interview with this band called “Freezepop.” I was an intern at Vice and we got tons of CDs in the mail and had to listen to them and decide what was cool. Q: How old were you when you first started writing?Ī: I started my first diary when I was 11. I always dreamed of adapting books into screenplays… I still do. Q: What initially inspired you to become a screenwriter?Ī: I think the first book that inspired me to want to become a writer was Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. Some of her other television credits include: Portlandia and Girlhattan.
